Patient Showcase – Kay

Kay Bradford Testimonial:

I have been a recipient of SottoPelle  for almost 15 years. Before hormone therapy, I was a mess! I was 40 pounds overweight, on five medications, ranging from anti-depressants to pain killers. I had osteopenia, a back that ached all the time and severe ADHD. I have none of that now and I’m 15 years older!

I have recommended your practice to a multitude of people over the years but one thing I learned for sure: a picture is worth a thousand words! The attached image is the one I show, when recommending hormone therapy to people.

Bless you all for the good you do for women and men, alike. I hope you find people who can contribute to your mission because I believe all people should feel as good as I do at 70!

My Gypsy Soul and Moving

“Things in motion stay in motion.”

Our emotional, physical and spiritual balance are all related to the law of biology and physics. After being widowed, I found myself in state of change, flux and moving.  In the past, I moved for very different reasons, but now my moves are physically, emotionally and spiritually all driven by forces within my control and in directions that I never anticipated. The need to change my surroundings and home were motivated by a need to heal and move forward with my life.

The First Law of Motion states, “A body at rest will remain at rest, and a body in motion will remain in motion unless it is acted upon by an external force.” This simply means that things cannot start, stop, or change direction all by themselves. It takes some force acting on them from the outside to cause such a change.

New views and perspectives allow for great positive energy and opportunities.  Each new move provides a wealth of experience on what works best when moving and when it is time to hide on the closest couch and let the troops take over.  Look how I match my workout clothes with my couch without thought!

As in decorating, moving and re-establishing your home has a lot to do with details.

I love the pretty details.

Some tips on things to avoid when moving:

  • Don’t stress the small things! It all works out in the end
  • Don’t try to do it all in a day by yourself!
  • Drink plenty of water and take breaks to eat!  It’s important to keep yourself hydrated and energized.
  • Don’t wait until the last day to start packing!

Some tips on musts when moving:

  • Call all your utility companies 2 weeks in advance to change over to your name
  • Ask for help! It’s okay to give yourself permission to have many people help you move in and out!  The more the merrier!  You will physically feel better in the end!
  • Use plastic container tubs and label them well!  Stronger and easier to pick up over boxes.
  • Have someone come in before the movers and add in white light bulbs, motion sensors in rooms and large storage racks!  Find yourself a great handyman!
  • Start packing up weeks in advance, one room at a time!  Finish one room, move onto the next!

Finally, when it’s all said and done – take a day get a Mani-Pedi and regroup your energy for your new home!  Light a candle and take a tub at the end of the day!  Feel the energy of your new home soaking in!

Enjoy your new surroundings!

Mom Knows Best – Listen and Exercise

Some things are said so often we tend not to listen. When it comes to exercise it’s important to pay attention and participate.

My mother has been telling me for years how important it is to stay fit and active as we age.  She’s going strong at 90, working out with a trainer 3x’s a week so there must be some truth in that!  Lately, the information she tells me now is more about lifting weights as I am aging. “Carol, she says, keep up on your body strength, its important so you can get out of chairs and lift simple items!”

Keep Moving

Exercise as a healthy part of your life is an absolute, but the importance of it increases as we age. There are so many studies that support improved quality of life and longevity with regular continued exercise.

I  have been a gym rat most my adult life.  I saw my mother take up running at an early age and thought: Wow what a great role model I should be doing that too! So I ran and ran and ran.  I found my mind going places I didn’t know existed. I was hooked on the high from exercise!  For me its more about getting in touch on another level with myself and spirit. Over the years I have changed up how and what I do to stay fit.  For others, it won’t be the same for them.

People often  ask me:  “What if I have never exercised”?

I say: It’s never too late to start. Take small steps and get moving.

This is my time. I dedicate it to my health and spirituality. Beyond the health benefits of a brisk walk each day or doing some weights,  I find it a great time to think and focus on myself and my growth. Even a walk out the door 1st thing for 15 minutes is a good starting point.

For me, it’s a quiet meditative walk each morning or a quick stop at the gym. I don’t worry about my hair, makeup or clothes – I am there for ME!!

Of course, there are times where I am unmotivated to go exercise. But, each day is a new opportunity to get out and get it done. I don’t dwell on my failures to not exercise but on my successes when I do finish a great workout.

I try to be consistent in healthy activities and in my lifestyle. After my recent whirlwind of packing, traveling and moving all while working – exercise seems like the last thing to do.

But, I must keep going. For me, its more about moving & breathing.  I give myself permission to do a shorter work out when I am tired and un-wanting to get out the door. When I get home I realize how great that felt and happy I got out, even for a shorter amount of time than usual. It’s all about trying.

Finding activities that you enjoy like swimming, bicycling, yoga, or golf are great ways to keep active. Finding someone to do it with, is even better. Often we will go to support someone at the gym before we do it just for ourselves. Whatever the motivation or intent – the sense of accomplishment in keeping active pays off in big ways.

Consistent time at the gym or doing your favorite activity even for 10 -20 mins a day will help keep you healthier. The sudden focus on exercise for folks over 50 is not a coincidence as “the aging population keeps increasing, more and more older people are recognizing a growing need for exercise in their lives. Maintaining an active lifestyle is crucial for sustaining health and happiness. Exercise can help older adults achieve a higher quality of life, and it can help them live longer as well.”

The bottom line:

“Exercising may even have the potential to increase lifespan, and three hours of exercise each week could possibly extend a person’s life by five years.”

See you at the gym!!!

Women in their late 30s to mid-40s are often taken by surprise when perimenopause symptoms start to appear.  Hot flashes, night sweats, foggy thinking, vaginal dryness, decreased libido, mood swings and depression are just some of the most common complaints.  Truthfully, hormonal imbalance can be devastating. Many women end up experimenting unsuccessfully with an assortment of remedies or HRT methods to find relief. Pills, capsules, sublinguals, patches, creams, gels, and injections can, at times, offer a reprieve from certain symptoms.  But, here’s the reality—most of these treatments have drawbacks or side effects that make them undesirable or even dangerousBesides the possibility of health risks, they do nothing to provide the balance you need for optimal health and well-being.

Drawbacks of other forms of HRT

  • Many hormone replacement methods rely on synthetic hormones or substances that are foreign to your body. That’s why the FDA requires pharmaceutical companies to provide label warnings with their products.  Just listen to the twenty seconds of “possible side effects” that accompany the drug company TV ads.  These side effects are why doctors are advised to prescribe the least amount of HRT for the shortest possible time.
  • Oral forms of HRT do not provide the bio availability, absorbability or continuous blood levels necessary for hormonal balance. Because they pass through the GI tract and liver, a higher dose is needed to achieve the right blood levels for symptom relief.
  • Creams & gels cause hormone ups and downs as opposed to the evenness of continuous hormone release that the body is accustomed to.  It is easy to over or under dose using these methods. The prescribed dosage itself is difficult to assess and monitor, requiring a lengthy trial and error period.  Skin to skin contact can harm others, including children and animals.
  • Injectable hormones rely on pharmaceutical synthetics, which are side-effect laden and unsafe. Hormone blood levels spike shortly after administration and decline rapidly after one to two weeks.  Long term use is impossible and hormone balance can never be achieved.
  • Patches do deliver hormone directly into the blood stream, but must be changed frequently. Towards the end of their usefulness, hormones again decline rapidly often leading to bouts of anxiety and hot flashes. Most patches have adhesive problems, either not sticking well or creating skin irritation.

The Truth About BHRT… It’s Amazing What Those Pellets Do

bhrt pelletsHave you heard about bio identical hormone replacement with pellet therapy? Maybe you’ve heard things, but you’re not sure what to believe. Here are the basics about BHRT…
Bio identical hormone replacement is an effective treatment for many symptoms associated with menopause and andropause (male menopause).

When hormone levels in our blood drop, many unpleasant side effects can occur, such as hot flashes, night sweats, loss of libido, depression, anxiety, loss of muscle mass and more. It can also affect the health of our cardiovascular system, bones, and skin. Bringing hormone levels up via BHRT can make you feel better and stay healthier as you age.

Just ask SottoPelle® patients, and they will tell you…Pellet therapy is the best delivery method for hormone replacement.

Some doctors prescribe synthetic hormones via pills, creams or patches. Not only are these hormones biologically different from the ones our body naturally produces, their delivery method can cause hormone levels to fluctuate greatly, creating the yo-yo effect, commonly referred to as the “hormone roller coaster”. With bio identical HRT using pellet therapy, the hormones that are used are biologically identical to the ones the human body produces, so they are metabolized in the same fashion. The body absorbs hormone pellets slowly over a period of months, delivering a consistent, physiologic dose of hormone. No yo-yos or roller coasters to be found.

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy is safe.

For many women who experience moderate to severe symptoms of menopause, doctors and healthcare professionals agree that hormone replacement therapy using bio identical hormones is a safe and effective way to address many of these symptoms (including hot flashes, trouble sleeping, irritability, low libido, lack of energy and brain fog…just to name a few).

Considering HRT…You’ve come to the right place!

We all want to live our best lives possible, and maintaining our overall health as we age often depends on many different factors including our lifestyle, activity level and genetics. What many don’t know is that declining hormone levels can also have an impact on overall health, thus having an understanding of what your levels are is paramount. At SottoPelle®, we recognize an important fact that others often miss— one size truly does not fit all. Our patients have specific lab work performed allowing our providers to identify hormone imbalances that are present. Based on these lab results, our providers are then able to prescribe individualized dosing to address the specific needs of each patient.

Menopause and Andropause how imbalance hormones affect you

Mid-life crisis as well as other noted psychological and emotional variations will also be noticed among both sexes as well. Just as in puberty when your hormones were on a rollercoaster, you may feel like you have returned to that crazy ride during menopause and andropause. Both medical phases of life have certain treatments that are available, effective, and that are medically recognized to improve quality of life. One of the most common treatment paths for both conditions is bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT). For both men and women this method will help to bring the hormone levels back to the proper levels. Managing the source of the problem delivers great relief in experienced symptoms. It is important that a patient is carefully monitored by a doctor while they are undergoing BHRT treatment. The doctor should be experienced, trained, and empathize with what the patient is going through. Make sure your doctor is not just treating symptoms, but the hormonal imbalance that both sexes have in middle age.

Educate yourself, men and women can learn a lot if they research the different things that can be expected when experiencing these conditions. If you opt for BHRT make sure you receive quality care and pellets from a verified SottoPelle physician. Not all BHRT pellet treatment is created equally. But, when it comes to aging both men and women have equal issues and can be improved with the appropriate treatment and healthy lifestyle.
