SottoPelle Joins the World Professional Association for Transgender Health
Feminizing or masculinizing hormone therapy is an exciting and extremely important step in a transgender individual’s journey to becoming their authentic self. But obtaining gender-confirming hormone therapy also comes with some risks, challenges, side-effects, and unknowns, as a person literally changes their body chemistry to align with their true identity.
Choosing the right hormone therapy doctor or medical provider is one of the most important decisions that a transitioning transgender individual will make. Hormone therapy is a lifelong commitment. But sadly – while every person’s experience is different – many transgender individuals still face pervasive discrimination, ignorance, or lack of clinical experience, when it comes to obtaining medical care.
The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) seeks to change this treatment disparity by promoting the highest standards of health care for individuals through the Standards of Care (SOC) for the Health of Transsexual, Transgender, and Gender Nonconforming People. This SOC is based on the best available science and the prevailing expert professional consensus.
SottoPelle has been helping transgender women and men live as their true and authentic selves with bio-identical hormone replacement therapy since the mid 1990’s. We are proud to announce that we have now been accepted for full membership in WPATH.
Many Doctors Lack Knowledge or Training in Transgender Hormone Therapy
Feminizing or masculinizing hormone therapy is a necessity for most transgender individuals – yet many doctors still rely on trial and error or guesswork in dosing to achieve the desired results.
A studied published in the medical journal Endocrine Practice entitled ‘Transgender Care by Endocrinologists’ found that surveyed endocrinologists and other hormone therapy providers reported that they had little opportunity to care for transgender patients, and they rated their competency to do so as “low.”
The SottoPelle® Method takes the guesswork out of transgender hormone dosing calculation for doctors. Through a proprietary hormone dosing calculation algorithm – accessed via an online dosing calculator – SottoPelle Hormone Method doctors have the tools they need accurately dose transgender patients.
The World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH)
The overall goal of the WPATH is to promote Standards of Care that provide clinical guidance for health professionals to assist transsexual, transgender, and gender nonconforming people with safe and effective medical treatments. It is their goal – and ours – to ensure that transgender patients maximize their overall health, psychological well-being, and self-fulfillment through access to effective medical care.
While SottoPelle Method focuses on hormone therapy, WPATH also extends this philosophy of education and inclusion to the medical fields of gynecologic and urologic care, reproductive options, voice and communication therapy, mental health services (e.g., assessment, counseling, psychotherapy), and hormonal and surgical treatments.
WPATH also offers members access to conferences, scientific symposiums, and advanced courses, and invaluable opportunities to interact with leading authors and researchers in transgender health.
WPATH, USPATH and Transgender Hormone Therapy in Adolescents
The United States Professional Association for Transgender Health (USPATH) also believes that hormone therapy, as well as puberty blocking medicine in transgender adolescents, should involve cooperation between physicians, psychologists, and other health personnel, parents or guardians, the adolescents, and other community stakeholders identified on a case-by-case basis – according to the guidelines of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), and the Endocrine Society.
WPATH and Transgender Advocacy
WPATH also unequivocally states that they recognize that transgender health is also dependent upon social and political climates that ensure social tolerance, equality, and the full rights of citizenship – in addition to good clinical care.
As such WPATH is committed to advancing public policies and legal reforms that promote tolerance and equity.
